Converting Shipper

Summary:

The Converting Shipper reporting to the Shipping Lead, with daily work direction provided by the Converting Plant Manager, is responsible for shipping and warehousing activities to ensure material movement, storage, and shipping in a manner that ensures safety, quality, and timeliness.   The position requires demonstration of competency for all on-the-job activities that may have a direct or indirect effect on product safety and quality. 

* Starting at $18.25 per hour

Principal Responsibilities:

Coordination

  • Ability to think strategically and identify issues that could impact business operations across the mill, converting plant and distribution warehouse
  • Communicate with the paper mill daily to ensure that broke is correctly loaded and shipped
  • Communicate with the production lead on warehouse issues and usage
  • Communicate with the sales team to confirm outbound shipments and proper documentation
  • Communicate with truck drivers to understand the arrival and departure of materials in order to reduce delays
  • Communicate with maintenance team for vehicle, dock, and racking repairs
  • Communicate with the Lead Shipper to ensure that all weekend shippers are aware of the converting shipper job requirements

Inbound and Outbound movements

  • Manage inbound shipments to ensure efficient traffic control and material storage
  • Visually inspect all inbound shipments for pallet, product, wrapping and labeling deficiencies and/or damage
  • Complete deficiency and/or damage mitigation prior to shipment.  Mitigation includes, but is not limited to:
    • Pallet wrapping
    • Replacement of damaged product
    • Pallet replacement
    • Banding
  • Report all deficiencies and/or damage to management on a daily and weekly basis
  • Ensures that shipping documentation is correct and complete, and delivered to the main office daily
  • Verify that all loads contain the correct product in the correct quantities prior to shipping
  • Verify that the load is properly labeled, and all documentation is correct prior to shipping
  • Ensure required bracing/dunnage is available and used to guarantee that shipped product arrives undamaged at the destination
  • Ensure that broke is sent to the mill in accordance with mill management requests
  • Provide weight and quantity to converting management of all KD and kraft wrap that has been identified for consumption as broke
  • Maintain inventory of shipping materials and supplies
  • Report any undue delays so that appropriate steps may be taken to ensure smooth flow of production

Warehouse

  • Ensure that materials in the warehouse are organized in a two row and gap manner
  • Ensure that rolls are double stacked safely; no rolls over 77” can be double stacked
  • Ensure that all materials are assessable by the production team
    • No rolls in front of KD
    • KD are kept in the same area; multiple rows must be next to each other
    • Minimum quantities of kraft wrap are maintained in racks
  • Participate in monthly inventory counts
  • No product in front of sprinkler risers
  • All products in racks are level and secure; no broken pallets
  • All rows of KD are aligned; no leaning stacks

Safety

  • Perform safe and efficient equipment operation
  • Complete vehicle and trailer pre-use inspections
  • Ensure dock equipment and safety devices are used in accordance with manufacturer specifications and are in good working order
  • Verify trailer safety equipment is available and in use
  • Maintain and ensure cleanliness of equipment, trailers, shipping supplies and warehouse; keeps housekeeping a high priority
  • Attend all safety meetings

Other

  • Develop weekend shipper tasks and train shippers in weekend accountabilities
  • Perform other duties which are deemed by management to be an integral part of the job including but not limited to fulfillment of work schedules, adherence to attendance policies, and other applicable operating rules, policies and procedures

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum High School diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Ability to understand verbal & written instructions in English including, but not limited to the ability to read and comprehend instruction manuals, instruction sheets, training manuals, and other verbal/computer-based training
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Ability to lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs repeatedly
  • Attention to Detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-speed environment and follow standardized work in a continuous improvement environment
  • Ability to work as a team and independently
  • Able to wear all required personal safety equipment including eye protection, safety vest, ear protection, and safety shoes

Essential Functions

  • Maintain consistent quality in work performance for extended periods of time
  • Stand, walk, bend, or reaching regularly for entire shift
  • Lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs repeatedly
  • Understand verbal & written instructions in English including, but not limited to the ability to read and comprehend instruction manuals, instruction sheets, training manuals, and other verbal/computer-based training

Equipment Used

  • Ability to operate equipment such as a Forklift, clamp truck, etc.
  • Ability to work under conditions that may require the use of company-provided personal protective equipment
